Barton Shares Vision for Hartford + Beyond Students
Barton, the Development Director, and Mark Panico, Chairperson of the Board, highlight the mission of a unique school offering tuition-free education to students in Hartford. Their approach is first-come, first-served, prioritizing local children and aiming to close the achievement gap in a city marked by racial segregation and disparities in educational outcomes.
The school serves a diverse student body, including a quarter of students who are English Language Learners, many of whom are recent immigrants or refugees. Focused on individualized learning, they use small class sizes (8-12 students) and differentiated instruction to meet each child’s needs. Holistic enrichment programs—including field trips, arts, and daily exposure to music and theater—help students discover their strengths and grow. Mental health counselors and technology for every student are key parts of supporting the whole child.
While Hartford's public schools face challenges, the school stands out with its strong academic performance, including a 71% grade-level achievement in math and no suspensions. The goal is to grow from 30 students to 40 and eventually offer a kindergarten class. With a $410,000 annual budget, supported by generous donations, grants, and local partnerships, the school plans to expand its offerings. Teachers, who may not yet be certified but use Common Core guidelines, are passionate about teaching and dedicated to the school’s mission.
The school is currently based at Emmanuel Church (formerly Trinity Episcopal Church), and is supported by the surrounding community, including neighboring towns like East Hartford, Bloomfield, and West Hartford. The school is open for tours and invites the community to get involved.
